Looking straight up to a sliver of sky from a super skinny alleyway in Venice. 😀 https://t.co/F2gDNTIAe9

In Venice, don’t think of a gondola ride as a touristy thing, think of it as preserving a centuries-old tradition and supporting the men and women who work to maintain the old ways.

(But, a tip: For a less ‘touristy’ feeling experience, don’t embark from the crowded stands in https://t.co/794qZbQvlO

A trip to Venice isn’t complete without a visit to one of its Scuole Grandi, because they were such an integral part of Venice’s history and culture.

This is a meeting room of the Scuola Grande dei Carmini. https://t.co/KEf4fUCN6h

Above Venice's Grand Canal: In the distance is the Campanile of St. Mark's Square. At the left center, you can see the large church of S.S. Giovanni e Paolo.

A story (with a point):

Once, with a group of travelers I was hosting in Venice, we took a sunset cruise down the Grand Canal on the vaporetto. It’s always a magical experience — and almost as magical is watching the faces of first-timers as they experience it . . .

The Milanese Chapel of the Frari in Venice, where the great Claudio Monteverdi 🎶 is buried, and where you’ll be amazed by this 1503 altarpiece by Alvise Vivarini and Marco Baisati. https://t.co/DOxNOZyiS7

Another reason to visit the Frari in Venice:

Henry James wrote of Bellini’s altarpiece, “Nothing in Venice is more perfect than this . . . . It seems painted with molten gems . . . It is as solemn as it is gorgeous and as simple as it is deep.” https://t.co/axzc7D95HZ

👉 Venice’s vaporetti have been chugging along the Grand Canal since 1881!

The first were steamboats, which is how they got their name: Vaporetto = “little steamer.” https://t.co/5z3UaLirjo

If you'll be in Venice for Carnival season, try some crunchy Galàni, a February treat! They look like deep-fried, sugar-dusted lasagna pasta. Apparently, these go back to ancient Roman times.

Mainlanders call them "crostoli," but Venetians call them "galàni." These are from https://t.co/PcHOoRPTpX

A hidden gem in Venice: The ceiling of the Marciana library, with painted panels by Veronese and other Renaissance artists.

Details like these make the city unforgettable. https://t.co/ORr4O1R1es

A highly recommended reading before going to Venice, my admired Carpaccio, who gave his name to the famous raw meat dish https://t.co/qqJgGMP5HX

1860 photo of the Doge’s Palace, from the east. How odd to see the bridge and Piazzetta empty!

In my opinion as a regular visitor to Venice, Italy, the worst time to visit Venice is July-August, when crowds are at their peak, and heat and humidity make people cranky. https://t.co/vV3cbZhpa7

One reason the Frari in Venice is a must-see church:

Titian’s “Pesaro Madonna,” c. 1519-26

Did you know that this, one of history’s most enigmatic paintings, hangs in Venice, Italy?

Giorgione’s masterpiece, “The Tempest,” c. 1507, has defied interpretation for centuries. https://t.co/pQ8qmCDAd7
